Beer Garden Classic: Quake 3 Engine Source Code Comments

Quake III: Engine Source Code Comments.
As you may already be aware the Quake 3 Game Engine source code has been released under the GPL... The engine, upon which dozens and dozens of games have been based on. In fact the halflife engine is based on quake and later became it's own engine..

Anyway.. I was digging around in the engine's code and was a bit amused at some of the comments left in there for it's release... Here is a small sample of the comments in the source code.

Elite Force Reunion Fest
ADF and FRAG-CAFE to host a Winter Reunion Fest!

Frag-Fest server is set to go on Jan 30-31 and a map list is posted at the ADF forums ( http://z9.invisionfree.com/AlliedDefenseFleet/index.php?showtopic=658 ).

As soon as I get the team speak info I'll post it. We have quite a few confirmations, but it would be good to know about how many plan to attend. If we have a large number of responses there will be a second server set up for the overflow.

I've already bumped into a few people I haven't seen on the servers in a long time !! SO.......get the word out to everyone! Forward this email, tell you friends :)

Let's get this party started and have some fun out there!

If you need maps you can go here >> http://maps.game-host.org/ or download the PK3 manager here >> http://www.beer-garden.org/bg2/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=11&lid=17

Beer-Garden Datacenter Move Update
Beer-Garden Datacenter Move Update

In case you missed the news ( http://www.beer-garden.org/bg2/forum/index.php?topic=3247.0 ) the Beer Garden is being forced to physically relocate our hardware. Here is an update on the process.

Layered Tech has been out of stock of any decent server to upgrade to that was in my price range. Therefore, we will be proceeding with the physical move of the existing Beer Garden hardware. I'm not incredibly happy with the fact that layered tech hasn’t restocked any of their servers during this move, leaving the only upgrade options costing a significant amount more per month.

What does this mean.
Quite simply this means downtime. On the morning of Saturday Oct 10th, the Beer Garden will disappear off the net while the physical hardware is transported 40 minutes across the state of Texas.

Web Sites:
Layered Tech assures me the downtime will be about 4 hours; however this will likely be closer to a day as DNS will need to propagate for all sites that live under the beer garden umbrella. If you use opendns for your dns it should be quicker.

Game Servers:
24 hours before the move, I will receive new IP addresses. This isn't much time to advertise the game server changes so you'll have to look for them.

Game servers will be the last to come back online, ideally by Saturday night.

The new IPs will be posted as a news item on the Beer Garden homepage.

Updates:
I'll be updating the site/server admins through our private mailing list. For everyone else keep your eyes on the Beer Garden twitter account @
http://twitter.com/beergarden

Finally:
A few thoughts from yours truly http://www.brian-shaffer.com/2009/09/15/layered-tech-the-worst-migration-plan-ever/

From PlanetQuake:
Another all-free Quake 3 project is alive and putting out, and it's called Q3min! There are version downloads available right now, and the mission behind this project is to create a free, high quality version of Quake 3 that's all legal and will work with custom maps and mods created over the years, and in the future. Here's the official blurbage:

This is a community project managed by dedicated Quake III Arena enthusiasts. Its purpose is to provide a freely distributable minimal version of Q3A that is fully compatible with the original game created by id Software. We wish to make a package that can use different mods as well as custom maps made for the original game Q3A. The package should have a reasonably small size for easy downloading.

We do not intend to stop when the first fully functional package is released. We would like to implement, test and maybe permanently integrate different enhancements suggested by people on Q3A forums. We want to make a game even better than the original!

Check it out at: http://www.q3min.org/

From PlanetQuake

Linux users looking for a free, Quake III powered, browser based shooter need look no further than the new Arena Live! This browser based version of Open Arena so it has custom textures, models, maps, weapons, and sounds. Arena Live currently supports only Linux and the Firefox, so I haven’t been able to to give it a run through yet. The game is currently in it’s Alpha stage, so don’t forget to report bugs if you see them.

Hop over and place your vote now!

Hello all, I have just basicly copied this post over from one of my admins over at gamesunited, we are basicly trying to get 100 people to register and vote at clanbase to get EF supported and into leagues and get old and new players onto this great game, please take time to read this post i copied made by SNAKE.

Hey guys, the titles kinda misleading, because it hasn't happened yet.

Basically there's about 43 Votes already and it's not even been up for long. We need 100 votes, usually it's 200 but it's been agreed by other head admins.

You need to register and vote. Please message this around and ask your clan members to vote too. Preferably without joining clans so all the votes can be counted.

VOTE HERE!!!!

What Is Clanbase?
http://clanbase.ggl.com/welcome.php?

How Will Clanbase Improve EF
- Introduce one of the biggest and well known leagues into the game again
- Hopefully help the game become more active by introducing new players and bringing old ones back
- A competative league and cups will be introduced to EF
- Anti cheat support (XRAY AND PUNKBUSTER)

Previous Clanbase EF Competitions

Alien Arena Offers A Glimpse Towards Alien Arean 2009
From their ModDB Post:

Only weeks away from release, Alien Arena 2009 has received another sweet visual upgrade, with the addition of GLSL post process shaders. This new feature has allowed us to do some nifty heat-wave distortions, such as when a rocket explodes, as well as some other tricks. With the system now in place, there are a near limitless amount of fun things we can do in the future!

We've also added quite a few new maps in the last weeks, including the remake of Dm-Chasmatic, a small, "killbox" type of level that is a blast to play in most any mode. Dm-Invasion is a brand new map that is set in an abandoned city that shows the aftermath of an alien invasion. This small map is an excellent 1v1 map with a great atmosphere.

In the next couple of weeks we will be finishing everything up, and are on target for our mid-June target for release!

-----

There are also some screenshots to have a gander at. It's amazing this is the Q2 engine

Filefront bought by original founders.
From http://welcome.filefront.com

FileFront has been acquired by the original founders of the site and will NOT be suspended as previously announced. This is NOT an April Fool's Joke.

After learning about Ziff Davis Media's plan to suspend FileFront at the end of March, the original founders of FileFront made the decision to buy it back from Ziff Davis Media.

We're happy to announce to the gaming community that as of today, April 1st, 2009, FileFront is a completely independent company again and is no longer part of Ziff Davis Media. All previously suspended services should be active and working again. We thank Ziff Davis Media for their cooperation and willingness to keep the site and community alive.

Due to the very unfortunate timing of this event and related announcements on March 24th and April 1st (April Fool's Day), we'd like to make it perfectly clear that:

1) 1) The March 24th announcement about FileFront suspending its operation was NOT an early April Fool's joke.

2) This announcement about the original founders buying back FileFront from Ziff Davis Media is also NOT an April Fool's joke.

3) We're making this announcement on April 1st because the deal was completed today and we want to bring all services back online immediately.

4) We would NEVER suspend FileFront as an April Fool's joke.

5) We are happy to be back!

FileFront has existed in one form or another (originally as FileLeech and Voodoo Extreme's downloads) since 1997. In the last 12 years, FileFront has become the gaming community's most comprehensive and trafficked library hosting millions of files for thousands of games while requiring no registration and providing uncapped download speeds. We look forward to improving FileFront and serving the gaming community for years to come.

Welcome home. Game On!
