Featured Download: BSG Beyond The Red Line

BSG Beyond The Red Line
Beyond the Red Line is a stand-alone total conversion for the award-winning Freespace 2 released by Volition and Interplay for the PC. It is based on the popular new tv-show Battlestar Galactica. No, not the one from the 70s.

BSG: BtRL is an open source, space flight simulator powered by the enhanced FS2: Source Code Project engine. This standalone game is set in Ron D. Moore's Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica universe.

When humanity is suddenly on the verge of extinction, you, like all others in the Twelve Colonies, must fight for survival in the midst of genocide. The Cylons have returned after forty years to lay waste to their creators, and in a heartbeat, all that you know is either dead or dying.

Your skills as a pilot will guide you in choosing a singular path: one knotted with chaos and intrigue, or another, besieged by disasters and in search of temporary reprieve. Hard decisions will pave the way to an outcome unfathomable to most, but also known... because it has all happened before.

When all hell breaks loose, where do you stand?

OA 0.8.0 Woes, BG Server Down?
After attempting to upgrade the Beer Garden Open Arena server to 0.8.0, I've ran into some issues.

First of, the server requires an older version of GLIBC.

/lib/tls/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by ./oa_ded.i386)

I was able to compile a debug build from the source, but no one can connect.

The server runs Debian.

Furthermore, I can't get the game to run on windows on my home machine. Any help getting this up and running would be much appreciated.

EF Aimbot in the wild.. How server admins can break it.
There is an aimbot making it's rounds for Elite Force, causing a lot of headaches for a lot of players. Apparently it's popping up a bit more on European servers than it is on US servers.

The good news is, there is a simple setting that server admins can use to break it so that it doesn't work on their servers.

Simply change your SV_MAXRATE to 8000. I know that seems low, but thats what the Beer Garden has always used.

Some people think they need to set the SV_MAXRATE super high, when in fact on slower connections with a lot of players it'll cause the players to lag, as this is the setting that allocates how much bandwidth each individual client is entitled to -- thus making sure there is plenty to go around.

If you set this too high, players on faster connections run the risk of lagging out those on slower connections. Setting it too low, causes everyone to lag.

Over the course of experimentation over the past 7 years, it seems like 8000 works well for servers of up to 20-24 player slots.

An easy fix, to thwarte some annoying cheaters.

World Of Padman In Talks With Game Publisher?
An interesting news item over at WoP HQ:

Well, now is the time to come clean with you and tell you why we were so discreet, why we couldn't post any news and why we had some trouble with our team.
The situation became harder and harder for us and we were just unhappy about the actual situation, so I decided to tell you about what's going on, to give this statement.

So, what did happen? What compelled us to close the doors in front of you? The easy solution for all those questions is: "publisher". Yes, there really was a publisher who was interested in selling WoP as a low budget game.
Many of us saw a real chance in it. The chance to make ourselves a professional name and the chance to have a honorable conclusion for our little game.
So we began to work harder and harder, beginning with the new game types and we also embarked on our single player game option. We designed new maps, new models and new power ups. We overhauled all 2500 map-textures, all shaders etc. The store version of WoP should notably differ from the free version, there should be a good reason to buy WoP in the stores.

Beer Garden Urban Terror Server Experiment
As an experiment and for a change of pace the CTF server which has only had occasional play lately has been changed to a TDM server running only two maps. Riyadh and Ramelle. These are both larger more popular maps giving room to strafe jump, camp, use the scoped weapons including the snipers (did I say that out loud?) and offer a different type of game play than smaller maps like swim or turnpike. Maybe add/substitute Kingdom or Oildepot in the future but I thought we would start with two of the classic UrT 4.0 maps. Why only two? Especially newer players like to get comfortable with just a map or two while they get used to the game. Being lost and not knowing the map is one of the bigger deterrents for a new player. This should help them get through the learning curve a bit quicker and they may progress to BG's other UrT server with almost all the maps. Either way, we gain a greater player base.

Obviously, if you don't like this idea, BGs regular UrT TDM server will still be running strong for those that want a more complete game. This won't replace it.

Getting Quake 3 to look like DOOM 3 and/or Quake 4 becomes a little easier each time the XreaL project releases a new build, and that has happened yet again! The new XreaL_PreAlpha_20080704.7z is now available and offers some fixes, optimizations and includes optional directional light mapping and a slightly adapted DarkRadiant level editor.

About Xreal:
XreaL will be a non-commercial multiplayer only first person shooter based on a heavily modified Quake 3 Arena engine (id Tech 3). The aim is to push the rendering technology until it can be compared with current commercial titles and then to produce a playable Total Conversion. Quake 3 Arena's gameplay will be only slightly modified. The simpleness of the original game will stay but the game media will be replaced completely with high quality assets that match the new engine's technology.

EF: Looking for mirrors for the PK3 Repository
Just recently we lost our primary mirror of the Elite Force PK3 Repository. Quite possibly the largest repository of maps for Elite Force in existence. We now are only running on one mirror with all the other domains aliased to that particular mirror.

If anyone out there can offer any help mirroring, we have syncing scripts written for linux, drop us a line.

It worries me to have such a vast resource only in one place.

VOIP support in the IOQUAKE3 Engine!
From the IOQUAKE3 Site:

Lets examine two quick points:
Hardcore gamers like choices.
Hardcore gamers like VOIP.

Based on these theories, ioquake3 is adding VOIP support for the next release. This internal support is going to bring along with it support for (entirely optional) Mumble positional VOIP audio. More nerd-speak after the break, the short and quick of it is, however:

We’re going to have VOIP for mods/new games, and baseq3. This is a pretty radical departure from the initial goal of not changing anything in baseq3, and is probably the single largest (obvious) end-user benefit for using ioquake3.

The fact of the matter is that if you want to blame someone for allowing it to be included, you can blame me (Zachary, lead omnipresent overseer of ioquake and related entities). If, however, this makes you happy and you want to praise somebody, give either big ups OR big props to Ryan Gordon (lead intergalactic space nerd) and Ludwig (Herr Angst).

The Voip Support is already in the ioq3 SVN..

An End to Lag Spikes On The Beer Garden + Other Updates
Open Arena Server Updated to 0.7.7
The Beer Garden Open Arena Server has been updated to the newest update. Enjoy, grab the patch in our download area.

No changes have been made to the server configuration as of yet, if you have suggestion post em here:
http://www.beer-garden.org/bg2/forum/index.php/board,16.0.html

No More Lag
After a lot of work fine tuning the server and getting some more concise monitoring going on. Seems like we've solved the Lag issue. The WoP server will remain down until we can figure out the issues with it. WoP was causing the lag issues.

Twitter Feed
We've added a twitter feed. Aside from manual updates, some of the server monitoring is tied into the feed, so that's the best place for the fasted updates:
http://twitter.com/beergarden
Follow the Beer Garden!

There is also a box with updates on the main page on the left side.

That's all for now,
Cheers,
Shafe

Open Arena 0.7.7 Patch Released
Anyway, this is mainly a bugfix release. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you upgrade from 0.7.6 to 0.7.7 (or rather, from 0.7.1 to 0.7.6 to 0.7.7 for half of you)

- Fixed "Getting stuck bug"
- Fixed logging bug
- Fixed UI crash
- Fixed overflow in Multiplayer list + Some of beast's changes to server list (longer names)
- Instantgib and All rockets disabled during single player startup
- Clears nextmap after single player
- Windows only: new SDL.dll allows Caps Lock and Num Lock to be used as keys.
- Using protocol number 69, this should only now show servers running 0.7.7 (In other words, no more lotsofservers with 'invalid game folder' error)

Lag Spikes on The Beer Garden
We've had this intermittent problem of lag spikes, and then an ongoing lag on some of the Beer Garden game servers. This is being caused by a runaway process that hangs and sucks up all the processor resources.

I'm looking into the issue so hopefully I can figure out why this is happening. In the meantime, The servers will be sending sms messages whenever processor usage gets beyond a certain point for more than a minute or two. This should help identify exactly what is causing the problem..

Stay tuned.. all will be well again soon.
